eLAYOVER - LAX: WHAT TO DO WITH 1-2 HOURS
  • Art show
  • Good Food
  • Drinks
  • Sightseeing

  • With just 1-2 hours to kill, you are going to want to stay on the airport premises, but you needn't restrict your stay to your terminal. Many of our suggestions will likely take you to a terminal other than the one your plane is leaving from, so a glimpse at our inter-terminal map will give you the lay of the land.

GETTING FROM ONE TERMINAL TO ANOTHER

You can walk around the airport in about 10 minutes but if you aren't able to do so, or feel a bit sluggish, you can jump onto the "A" free LAX Shuttle which makes a continuous loop in the oval roadway which connects the terminals. You can get the shuttle on the lower level (outside the baggage claim areas) at stops which are conveniently located on the center island. Look for an overhead sign which reads "LAX Shuttles."

If you are traveling with carry-ons you might want to lighten your load and store your bags in an electronic locker which can be found in every terminal. Doing so will also save you from the hassle of having to pass through several security areas with the same luggage.

    ART EXHIBITION - UNITED TERMINAL
If you have an extra 30-60 minutes and you don't care to sit around at your gate, you can walk over to Terminal 7 which houses United Airlines and see their current art exhibit. You'll have to pass through security as the large area between security and the concourses houses a wonderful changing exhibition.

    GOURMET PIZZA
Over the past few years the decent meal options have improved markedly at LAX,and there is no better example than famed restaurateur Wolfgang Puck's ( Spago and Chinois On Main) Pizza Cafes. These modestly priced restaurants which first surfaced in some of the better shopping centers in Southern California have now expanded to the airport with branches in 2 terminals. If you're in a hurry, you can get a fabulous pizza, a salad and a glass of wine and it won't set you back too much.

    TRADITIONAL AMERICAN GRILL
Another restaurant group which has brought their cuisine to the airport are the folks who operate the The Daily Grills, a popular Southern California chain which has been expanding nationally. The Daily Grill at LAX, which is located in the Bradley International Terminal, is is the largest full-service airport restaurant in the United States. It's open for open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their traditional American style menu is extensive, with everything from burgers, steaks and chops to grilled fish and chicken, as well as plentiful main course salads. The prices are moderate and the portions good sized. San Franciscan's might find some comfort in their Joe's Special, a ground beef, eggs and spinach scramble which has been a favorite dish served in San Francisco's classic grilles all the way back to the early part of this century. If you're flying on a domestic carrier you'll find the International terminal within easy walking distance or you can wait for the inter-terminal shuttle. (map)

    TRENDY FOOD AND DRINKS
The Encounter is truly centrally located and a short walk from all terminals. This fun spot which is located in the 60's style building which has come to be the symbol of LAX was taken over by new management who upgraded the decor 50's retro interior several years ago. They have a full menu, a bar with a view of the airport and on week-ends turns into a hot disco. Great food but a bit on the pricey side. [ return to menu ]
